CISAER: Courses on the Internet: Survey, Analysis, Evaluation, Recommendation

CISAER is a project supported by the European Leonardo da Vinci programme. The project aims to provide a comprehensive, state-of-the-art survey of course provision on the WWW with professional analysis, balanced evaluation and far-reaching recommendations which will provide the field of vocational education and training in the EU with a tool for dealing with this new training dimension.

Characteristics of provision: NKS Distance Education is presently being transformed from a traditional distance education institution to a modern web-based learning space. From autumn 99 we are expanding the range of web-based courses dramatically under the name of NKS Nettstudier (Netstudies). We aim at putting all our traditional correspondence courses on the web within May 2000, and we are continually developing new curriculim areas for web-based teaching and learning. We have adopted the Swedish course tool LUVIT as our platform for web-based course development, and are active as partners in the LUVIT corporation, www.luvit.com.

Characteristics of provision: The Virtual University is structured as an online service using powerful workstations. It is based on the Internet technology and integrates databases. On user side, it utilizes standard software. Students can access the Virtual University via Broadband-ISDN, modem, cable modem, ISDN or Internet. A database system is embedded in the WWW-surface of the Virtual University that realizes a peronalization of the offerings and supports the administration of courses. Different kinds of course materials are offered to the students: multimedia courses, videos, computer based training, highly interactive courses with integrated working and experimental environment, animations and pure text. In the concept different forms of communication are supported among the students and between student and lecturer. Therefore various communication tools are applied such as e-mail, chat, newsgroup and video conferencing. Apart from the online support of course communication the tools are applied to perform different online events, e. g. online seminars, practical training and oral examinations.

Characteristics of provision: The purpose of HomeWorld is to establish a flexible, technology based distance learning concept on the design and production of Internet based communication. The last stage of this course is an “Action Learning” case in solving concrete needs in the participant´s own company or organisation. At the end of the course the participant will have produced and implemented a Web-site for his/hers own organisation. The coherence between course content and course delivery is an educational-technological innovative aspect. Almost all of the material for the course work is Web-based in order to establish a coherent connection between the instructional form and its content. This threaded technique will in itself contribute to understanding just how WWW is being used. Learning about Web-publishing via the Web gives a synergetic effect: it is by using the technology that you will eventually master it.

Interactive exercises are worked on the Web, which is also used for chat and discussion.
