NKI Distance Education

NKI Distance Education (or NKI Fjernundervisningen, to give it its Norwegian name) was established in Norway in 1959. The institution has had a steady growth and development, with particular emphasis on research and development. NKI is today one of the leading non-governmental educational institutions in Europe, in both traditional distance educationNKI and large scale integration of technology into distance education. We are also one of the largest distance education institutions in Northern Europe. A further presentation of NKI Distance Education is available at URL: http://www.nki.no/fj/.

NKI Distance Education offers approximately 60 study programmes and more than 300 courses at secondary and undergraduate level, as well as specialized courses and hobby courses. The school employs some 60 full-time and 400 part-time employees.

NKI Distance Education has each year around 20 000 active students out of a Norwegian population of four million inhabitants.

NKI Distance Education is recognized by the Ministry of Education, Research and Church Affairs and receives each year government grants towards operating costs.

Higher Education

NKI offers a range of subjects leading to examinations at undergraduate level, partly in collaboration with public universities and partly under our own management with public recognition. Our courses cover a broad spectrum of subjects in the fields of information technology, science and mathematics, philosophy, psychology, education, economics and business administration.

Upper Secondary Education

At upper secondary level NKI Distance Education offers courses and training leading to examinations in general studies, health and social studies, design studies, hotel and catering, mechanical trades, building and construction trades and electrical trades.

Vocational training

For some trades, no training is available in the state school system. NKI Distance Education has developed a large number of programmes for these trades, ranging from interior designers to haulage contractors, caretakers and employees in the fashion industry.

Cultural and hobby courses

We also offer a number of hobby courses and courses of cultural interest, such as the study of wine and communication between cultures.

On-the-job training

Most students contact us as private individuals. Nevertheless, over 1000 Norwegian businesses and public institutions have availed themselves of the services we offer in the education and training of their employees. NKI also undertakes to develop and implement tailor-made training programmes for employees.
